The Unspeakable Atrocity

Sunday night marks the beginning of the Highest Holy Day in Judaism, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Tonight, KCRW presents an extraordinary documentary produced by the BBC about the BBC and its coverage of the Nazi concentration camps in World War II. This program was honored with a Peabody Award, the highest recognition in American broadcasting. Airs 7-7:30pm.

Rabbi Abulafia's Boxed Set

For more than two years in the 1950's, avant-garde ethno-musicologist Harry Smith recorded a Lower East Side Rabbi's cantorial music, folk songs and Yiddish story-telling. The Rabbi's eccentric grandson is hoping to re-release a condensed version of this material. It's a holy mission for him. The program you are about to hear was produced for KCRW by Jon Kalish. It has been honored with this year's Gabriel Award recognizing programs that uplift the spirit, sponsored by the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals. Originally aired in December, 2005, we broadcast it tonight on the occasion of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, which begins this evening. Airs from 7-7:30pm.

Recently named National Public Radio's newest senior analyst, veteran broadcast anchor and correspondent Ted Koppel is convening a Town Meeting at National War College at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C., for the Discovery Channel and NPR, timed to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America.

In "The Price of Security," Koppel asks how the United States can effectively protect the homeland, while at the same time protecting the privacy and civil liberties of Americans. Aired Wednesday, September 13, 2006. [MORE]

For the fifth anniversary of 9/11, American RadioWorks rebroadcasts the beautifully haunting documentary from the Sonic Memorial Project. In the weeks and months after 9/11, NPR's Lost and Found Sound and the public broadcasting community collected audio traces of the World Trade center, its neighborhood and the events of September 11, 2001.
