VOLUME
TWO --
In August, 1995 KCRW and Mammoth
Records proudly released Rare on Air, Volume 2, another in KCRW"s
annual live in-studio performance series. Once again we've put together
a group of very special songs - all recorded live in KCRW's live
performance studio during "Morning Becomes Eclectic," hosted by Chris
Douridas. This time around, Rare on Air features songs not found on record
in any other form - including a soon-to-be pop masterpiece from World
Party, a gem from the prolific Georgia songwriter Vic Chesnutt, Belly's
Tanya Donnelly and Lou Barlow from the seminal lo-fi band Sebadoh. Rare
on Air, Volume 2 documents the Los Angeles performance debut of the Dutch
band Bettie Serveert, plus a song performed after an all night drive from
San Francisco by the Cranberries - months before the Irish quartet achieved
their worldwide pop-star status. Here also is Philip Glass' composition
"Opening" from his "Glassworks" album, with Glass himself performing it
for the first time in public. Meanwhile two rock veterans - Jackson Browne
and Joni Mitchell - offer intimate new looks at classic songs. More stunning
cuts include the album"s lead-off track from the quirky New York-based
Tokyo duo known as "Cibo Matto" (Italian for "food madness"), the Scottish
songwriter Lloyd Cole covering the work of a notable Canadian songwriter,
swamp folk from the elusive JJ Cale, an incendiary groove from MC 900
Foot Jesus, and alternative chanteuse Aimee Mann with an intimate story
of another band.
