Giving Thanks 2003: A Celebration of Fall, Food, & Gratitude
From 7 to 8 pm, Thanksgiving Day, Giving Thanks 2003: A Celebration of Fall, Food, & Gratitude provides thoughtful reflection on the meaning of the holiday. Featuring a stunning selection of classical music, it considers how gratitude is rooted to a sense of place, delving into expressions of thanks for home, country, and the natural world.
Host John Birge welcomes new guests to this year's table. He talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein about her family Thanksgiving, and she reads her essay "Ah, That First Feast in Wild Manhattan" from Shiksa Goddess. He is also joined by Andrew Sullivan, writer for The New York Times and New Republic editor, who reads his essay "My America: A Thanksgiving Reflection," written for the London Times.
In keeping with the theme of place, listeners enjoy a classic recording of Dylan Thomas reading his famous poem, "Fern Hill."
Like a good Thanksgiving feast, Giving Thanks combines traditional fare with unexpected delights. One such traditional offering is a rare recording of actor Charles Laughton. His spellbinding story connects his personal discovery of Chartres Cathedral with an excerpt from Jack Kerouac's "The Dharma Bums" and the 104th Psalm. It is a moving and powerful tale, giving thanks for the discovery that art connects us all to a greater creative spirit, offering a beautiful focus for the program and the day. Aired Thursday, November 27, 2003. [MORE]
