Bio:
Nic Harcourt came to KCRW (89.9 FM) in the spring of 1998, after spending eight years helping to build the reputation of the highly respected radio station, WDST-FM, in Woodstock, New York. As the Music Director and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic at KCRW, Harcourt's daily program has raised more money for the station than any other program on air. He has developed and increased the reputation of the music programming, launching to stardom artists such as Dido, David Gray and Shelby Lynne.
MBE can be heard weekday mornings from 9 AM to 12 Noon on 89.9 FM, Santa Monica, CA and around the world on www.KCRW.com. MBE is archived online and rebroadcast the following day at www.KCRWMusic.com from 4 to 7 PM and 2 to 5 AM weekdays.
At WDST, Nic started his radio career as News Director, then as Music Director. He also spent five years hosting the morning drive time show, "Nic in the Morning," and closed out his last two years as the station's Program Director. WDST's program philosophy under Harcourt was to introduce new music ahead of the curve to a discerning audience. Harcourt is credited with the American radio premiere of artists Moby, Garbage, and Semisonic, among many others.
Since his arrival at KCRW, the music department has continued to prosper, attracting a loyal audience, and the respect of music industry leaders and artists alike. Harcourt is highly regarded in the music business for his ability to mark the next new sound and bring to the public eye a range of music and artists. Acclaimed music writer, Marc Weingarten describes Harcourt as "the most influential DJ in America," and a "kingmaker." Fran Healy, lead singer of the band Travis, gives the artist's point of view: "[Morning Becomes Eclectic is] all about the music, not personality, which is a nice change. And if Nic gets behind your album, you'll see the results."
In late 2000, KCRW launched a new national program with Public Radio International called Sounds Eclectic. As a two-hour, best-of Morning Becomes Eclectic, Harcourt hosts the new program with a complimentary website at www.soundseclectic.com. The show airs on the web at www.kcrwmusic.com on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon and all archived editions can be found at www.soundseclectic.com. Each show features a live recorded session and interview with an established or emerging artist. Other public radio stations around the country are also beginning to include Sounds Eclectic in their programming.
In 1999, Nic oversaw production of KCRW's fifth compact disc release of live in-studio performances, "Morning Becomes Eclectic." Released by Mammoth Records, the artists on the album donated their royalties. They include: Beth Orton, Air, Sixpence None the Richer, Freestylers, Semisonic, Ednaswap, Lyle Lovett, Mercury Rev, PJ Harvey, Morcheeba, and Pink Martini. In 2001, "Sounds Eclectic" (PalmPictures), the album named for the national PRI program Nic hosts, is due out in April with tracks from such recently acclaimed artists as: Travis, Beck, Badly Drawn Boy, Bebel Gilberto, and Stars.
Most recently, Nic was nominated for Non-Commercial Program Director of the Year by Gavin Magazine in 2000 and 2001, the highly-respected San Francisco-based national radio and music trade magazine.
