April 2006 Bookworm Schedule

May 4 * SUSAN STRAIGHT, A Million Nightingales (Pantheon)
Susan Straight s novel about slavery has a buried theme: the commodification of the body and the fetishizing of mixed-blood children. We explore the way in which the culture of slavery re-emerges in the racial issues of contemporary American life.

May 11 * IAN MONK, Writings for the Oulipo (Make Now Press); translator of New Impressions of Africa by Raymond Roussel (Atlas)
Oulipo is the school of literature that uses linguistic constraints to create a new, playful way of writing. Some members of Oulipo restrict the number of vowels used; some never use the same word twice (quite a feat!). Here, Ian Monk, one of the two members of the Oulipo who write in English, discusses some of the unusual ground rules that generate his poems and stories.

May 18 * DEBORAH EISENBERG, Twilight of the Superheroes: stories (Farrar, Straus & Giroux)
The amazing Deborah Eisenberg has written some of the most astute and funny stories about American city life. Today, she reveals the motives behind her most-recent, most-powerful collection. She examines the shift in the American sensibility after 9/11 and tries to describe the new kind of prose it requires.

May 25 * CHIP KIDD, Book One, Work 1986 2006 (Rizzoli)
Chip Kidd is one of the pre-eminent designers of book jacket art in publishing today. His designs have inspired a whole new look for books. He discloses his procedures for discovering the image that will illustrate the heart of a novel and how that image will be embodied on the jacket.

Bookworm host, MICHAEL SILVERBLATT, interviews writers of fiction and poetry -- the established, new, and emerging -- with insight and precision. Bookworm airs on KCRW 89.9 FM and KCRW.com on Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:00pm. Each program is archived online and On Demand at www.KCRW.com.

New Commentator Frazier Moore
Mondays at 4:44pm on air, podcast and on demand online

Among Frazier Moore's earliest memories is watching Ding Dong School, one of the first TV shows for children, and sitting too close to the screen. Moore now covers TV for the Associated Press, reviewing programs, profiling performers as well as behind-the-scenes figures, and analyzing the medium. In between, he attended the University of Georgia, graduating with a bachelors degree in journalism. He was a feature writer for the Fort Myers (Florida) News-Press and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, often writing about TV. He also freelanced for publications including TV Guide, Spy, Connoisseur and Interview. He has been a Manhattan-based television writer for the AP since 1992. Despite his ongoing concerns about TV, he is happy to report that watching lots of it, even too close, hasn't ruined his eyes.

Frazier Moore airs his complaints, kudos and other observations concerning what's on TV -- and what's behind it -- on Watching Television, which grapples with the programs, the medium and the shifting definition of television in the Internet age. Mondays at 4:44pm and podcast.

Special Programming: Families of War on Memorial Day
Monday, May 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm

"Families of War" is the gripping fifth program in the series Experiencing War, presented by the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, and produced by Lee Woodman Media, Inc. This extraordinary project is the largest round-up of personal narrative since the Depression. It fills in the gaps left by the history books with intimate, highly individual glimpses into the human condition. Each story is different. But together they illustrate the universal themes of fear, hate, sacrifice, growth and love.

Former Senator Max Cleland, Vietnam veteran, hosts this show with deep personal understanding of the issues and passionate concern for veterans and their families. Families of War will air on Memorial Day from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
