March 2006 Bookworm Schedule

March 9 * JOHN BARTH, Where Three Roads Meet: Novellas (Houghton Mifflin)
John Barth, a hero of the post-modern novel, talks about (among other things) heroism, the name Fred (which mysteriously recurs in all three of these novellas), the nature of the novella, and the nature of stories. He s so graceful that he even tells how a story can be a narrator, describing its own birth, middle, and old age. The essence of virtuosity: long live John Barth.

March 16 * OCTAVIA BUTLER, Fledgling (Seven Stories Press)
*This interview was recorded just a few weeks before Octavia Butler s unexpected and untimely death on February 24 this year.*
As a science fiction writer, the MacArthur Prize-winning Octavia Butler has taken the conventional elements of the genre and transformed them so that they profoundly comment on sex, race, biology and history. Here, she proves that all of her revelations depend on a deep understanding of the characters. Her sympathy for her young vampire heroine is the key.

March 23 * WALTER KIRN, Mission to America (Doubleday)
Walter Kirn uses comedy the way a magician uses sleight-of-hand. His hilarity conceals sadness, his levity masks gravity. Here, we talk about American spirituality and how it often manifests itself as naïve nonsense before transforming into perilous disregard for life.

March 30 * JORIE GRAHAM, Overlord (Harper Collins)
Jorie Graham, whose work is known for its depth and complexity, makes a plea for moral action. She reads a poem that centers on the problem of human responsibility and talks about the desire for poetry that affects our behavior in the world.

Bookworm host, MICHAEL SILVERBLATT, interviews writers of fiction and poetry -- the established, new, and emerging -- with insight and precision. Bookworm airs on KCRW 89.9 FM and KCRW.com on Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:00pm. Each program is archived online and On Demand at www.KCRW.com.
